    Can Mother Nature make mistakes?

    To be fair, in general I think Mother Nature is pretty clever. We may not always approve of inherent behaviour, people’s or animals’ instinctive urge to act in a certain manner, as my previous Blog Post about the ‘wicked’ cuckoo chick has shown. However, I think in most cases, Mother Nature has got things fairly right. Almost every single year though, I wreck my head as to why, oh why, our resident frogs seem to be programmed to lay copious amounts of spawn in the rainwater that has accumulated in our tractor’s wheel ruts alongside one particular field.     Is it the Cuckoo’s fault?

    For about a week now, the cuckoo has been announcing that spring has come here in Bonane. Its distinctive call of “cuck-oo cuck-oo” has been heard by several people but, as usual, this secretive bird is heard rather than seen. For a few days, the cuckoo – apparently just returned to Ireland from its toasty wintering grounds in central and southern Africa – seemed to have got it right. Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday were mainly very pleasant weather days indeed. Plenty of laundry was washed, then dried on the line. Children and adults alike got their first sunburn of the year.
